對 looks simple because learners often meet it as "right" or "correct". Someone asks a question, you answer 對, and the meaning feels easy. But 對 is much bigger than that.

The key is that 對 often marks alignment. Sometimes that alignment is agreement. Sometimes it is direction. Sometimes it is a relationship between one thing and another.

Agreement: yes, correct

The easiest use is the short answer Yes, that is right. Here 對 confirms that the other person is right. It can be a full response by itself, especially in conversation.

Relationship: to or for

Now look at This matters to me. Translating 對 as "right" would make no sense. Here 對 marks the person affected by the statement. The sentence means "This is important to me" or "This matters for me".

Direction: toward something
